About this deal

So to understand this, have a look at this image again where I show how this paint acts on tissue paper. I like this guy a lot, but my Necron army never got past the stage of being “fledgling” and was mostly painted two years ago, and I think now i would do them differently. The body is just Army Painter silver spray washed Nuln Oil, the carapace is Naggaroth Night then Xereus Purple highlighted with Genestealer Pink, and the green is Warpstone Glow -> Moot Green. The gold is just Retributor Gold washed Seraphim Sepia, and the brassy bits are Runelord Brass which I think was also washed Sepia. Availability wise, it’s Vallejo. So, well. if you’ve been painting a while and you are sat in your painting space right now, look around. There’s some Vallejo paint right there…

With that your model is done! Just base them how you want and you’re good to go. I went with a nice desert look for the Setrakh Dynasty. Metallic paints contain a few key ingredients, including a clear binding medium (which acts as a delivery vehicle) and the metal flakes in the paint. The gloss base coat has really changed this paint, it’s reflectivity is so high that it almost looks a different colour (it isn’t). Mr Sigmarine has an almost mirror-like finish whereas the Space Marine is much duller and has even retained some of the surface texture from the matte primer. – a testament to just how thin these airbrush colours are. As you can see, the aluminium has settled on the surface of the tissue but the colour has soaked in. So essentially this is all bare silver aluminium pigment mixed with some kinds of medium and coloured liquid pigments. Some might say that these metallics aren’t as bright or reflective as the liquid metal version (alcohol-based metallics). But, at the end of the day, I don’t think you can tell the difference, especially on small miniature surfaces.Primer technically is doing a different job to basecoating; it needs to grip well onto the underlying material and provide a good surface for the next layer of paint to grip to. Basecoats are just the main colour you want to work from. While priming and basecoating can often be done in one step on plastic, resin usually benefits from an undercoat primer step.

Using a piece of foam I sponged on some Stormhost Silver . I only did this on areas that would make sense for wear and tear, such as hard edges. This gives a nice worn look in a random pattern. Use this sparingly. From there, assembly time. Here I thought I’d test the theory that you can build these without glue, and the answer is that yes, you can, and they’re mostly fine. There were a couple of joins that were a little bit looser than I’d like (so I did add glue to those after testing the dry fit) but if you really wanted to go glue-free you could. The hardest parts to work with were faces – GW have devised a clever way to hold these into place, which is that they’re attached to one of the arms and sort of get twisted into position and held by the tension, which works but is a little fiddly to line up, and the main place I went “screw it, adding glue”. Besides, Duncan is a GW employee, he's in the business of shifting their products, howeve obliquely, not imparting best hobby practice. I suspect they're aware of other companies that do make coloured and metallic primers and are demonstrating their own paint sprays being used in a similar manner to try and mitigate against customers purchasing elsewhere. We will then start the highlights. Glaze on some Citadel Nurgling Green to set where the brighter parts of the model should be.When we get to the lower value colours the colours themselves are’t disimilar at all – The difference between 701 Aluminium and 706 White Aluminium is entirely unclear to me. Chrome is almost the same again, it’s just a bit Shinier. The only explanation I could have for this is that it is sorcery! Vallejo Metal Color Review – Range I’ve painted a lot of miniatures with each of these metallic paints. I find that these 5 paints do everything I need. For simplicity, I’ll focus on painting with a regular brush. All in this gives us a much greater range of metallic colours. but the addition of inks reduces the reflectivity of the paint just a touch. It’s still shiny it’s just not a rich shine like it was. The color is bright and highly-reflective. It’s closes competitor is the slightly brighter (more “silvery”) Citadel Stormhost Silver. On a smooth surface, the final dried metallic is like a bright polished steel or even aluminum.
