About this deal

After an admonition that kings who cannot lead must abdicate, the scene switches to Vienna in 1806. It shows the abdication of the last Holy Roman Emperor, Francis II of Austria. In the film, the character Gneisenau describes him as "an Emperor who abandoned the German people in their hour of need". My own view of the film is that it is a good, engaging, and interesting look at a little-known aspect of the Napoleonic Wars, as well as a fascinating sidelight on the Second World War and the fall of the Third Reich. The battle scenes---particularly of the bombardment of Kolberg---are very effective. The love story between Schill and Maria is also believable. See the DVD and judge for yourself. One hopes that the foregoing will add not only to your understanding of this movie, but also to your enjoyment. As Gobbels' answer to Gone With the Wind, it is worthwhile in and of itself. I highly recommend it.

Less than two months before the battle, a German propaganda movie, filmed in the city in 1944 and covering the siege of Kolberg of 1807, was released.Kołobrzeg is also a regional cultural center. In the summer take place – a number of concerts of popular singers, musicians, and cabarets. Municipal Cultural Center, is located in the Park teatralny. Keep under attachment artistic arts, theater and dance. Patron of youth teams and the vocal choir. As the Red Army marched into Guben and Babelsberg, work was still being done on the editing of the second negative. In Breslau, and Danzig, the film was sent into action, as it were; it was shown to the fighting units and the people of the beleaguered cities. Goring, Himmler, Donitz, and Guderian were given copies. The Volkischer Beobachter/People's Observor correspondent saw the film's version of Kolberg in 1807 'As if it were part of ourselves,' referring to 'its uncanny relevance to our times,' but the catastrophe could not be halted by the film. On 17 March the Germans abandoned most of the defensive lines, leaving only a smal l number of troops to cover their retreat, and started to evacuate their main body of forces from the city. Polish forces took the railway station and reached the port, but most of the German troops managed to evacuate to Swinemünde (now Świnoujście). The last German stronghold was in the fort built near today's lighthouse on the coastline.Over 80% of the city was destroyed in the heavy fighting. The battle was among the most intense urban warfare the Polish army took part in. Polish casualties were estimated at 1,206 dead and missing, and 3,000 wounded. Before the end of World War II the town was predominantly German Protestant with small Polish and Jewish minorities. Almost all of the pre-war German population fled or was expelled so that since 1945, Polish Catholics make up the majority of the population. Around the turn from the 18th to the 19th century an increase of the number of Catholics was observed, because military personnel had been moved from West Prussia to the town. [ citation needed] Lighthouse in Kołobrzeg Kołobrzeg eastern beach Number of inhabitants in years Very few Nazi propoganda films achieved the effect for which they were intended and despite costing an estimated 8.5 million Reichmarks, this opus is no exception. Although conceived in 1942 it was not released until 1945 by which time its message that resistance is preferable to surrender was unlikely to appeal to citizens who had already paid a heavy price for their flirtation with National Socialism. Anyway, not many cinemas were still standing and the majority of film goers much preferred to watch 'Baron Munchhausen'. The Soviet East Pomeranian Offensive, commencing on 24 February 1945 managed to cut off and surround the city and its defenders (mostly from the German Army Group Vistula). The first commander of Festung Kolberg was an elderly officer, General Paul Herrmann [ de], but due to illness he was transferred in February to a less demanding post. The command was taken by Colonel Gerhard Troschel. After 1 March the city was under the command of a former Afrika Korps officer, Colonel Fritz Fullriede. Gneisenau 'You can only apply the right that is based on law and discipline.' The alternative to obedience at any price is contrasted with chaos.' Just as Gobbels---on Feb. 4, 1945---had remarked that the mere thought of defeat for National Socialism/Nazism conjured up 'visions of European chaos.'
